Former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Rick Santorum slammed President Obama over a decision by Standard and Poor’s to downgrade the U.S. AAA credit rating.
“If this downgrade holds, then it’s another example in a long line of examples of the President’s failure of leadership. Is anyone surprised at this point? There are 14 million people out of work and looking to the White House for answers – but they are receiving nothing but a blank stare,” Mr. Santorum said.
“The markets are scared and the credit downgrade has happened because the President and this Congress continue to address the symptoms and not the disease,” the Pennsylvania Republican added.
Mr. Santorum, who continues to lag in the polls, has increased his presence in Iowa as the Ames Republican Presidential Straw Poll quickly approaches.
Meanwhile, the White House pushed back against criticism put forth by Republican presidential candidates.
“Over the past weeks and months the President repeatedly called for substantial deficit reduction through both long-term entitlement changes and revenues through tax reform, with additional measures to spark jobs and strengthen our recovery,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement.
“That is why the President pushed for a grand bargain that would include all of these elements and require compromise and cooperation from all sides.”
