Rick Santorum is the latest Republican hopeful to make his unofficial candidacy official: he announced in Somerset, Pennsylvania this morning that he's running for president. Santorum's is one of several candidacies that, from the outside, don't appear to make much sense. He lost his 2006 Senate reelection race by 17 points in the purple state of Pennsylvania. But Santorum is not yet running in the general election (and probably won't be).

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum formally entered the race for the Republican presidential nomination Monday, staking out ground as an ardent fiscal conservative who would overhaul both Social Security and Medicare to bring the budget into balance.

Announcing his bid in Somerset, Pa., where his Italian-immigrant grandfather settled in 1927, Mr. Santorum used some of the harshest language of the presidential campaign to date to accuse President Barack Obama of wrecking the economy, centralizing power in Washington and robbing Americans of their freedom.

This election is about maintaining freedom, Rick Santorum said in the announcement of his presidential campaign this morning in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. It was to Carpenter's Park that his grandfather came from Italy for the sake of the freedom of his children, and it was there the Santorums returned today. The former Pennsylvania senator said that Americans are looking for a "A leader who is optimistic and believes that we meet those challenges.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum formally kicked off his 2012 presidential campaign in Somerset, Pennsylvania Monday, saying the birth of the Tea Party helped him understand that the "anxiety and concern that [he has] for the future of this country" is shared by Americans across the country.

"They understand that something is wrong," the Pennsylvania Republican argued, suggesting President Obama has failed in steering the economy and has devalued "our moral currency."

She was protesting news that the president of Urban Outfitters has contributed to former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, and taking some liberty with arguments Santorum’s made about the importance of protecting traditional marriage.

Yesterday was a big day in the Santorum household. After long months of discernment, my father has decided to run for president of the United States of America. This morning, as I drove my sister Sarah Maria to school, she looked over at me and said, “Wow. I think I’m still absorbing how important yesterday was!” I had to agree.

"We may not remember it now, but Santorum was the up-and-coming Republican before his defeat in 2006. Elected to the Senate in 1994 at the tender age of 36, he was elected to the House four years earlier after knocking on 25,000 doors. Two years later, he won 61 percent of the vote even as President George H.W. Bush lost his district by 22 points — an astounding result, really. While in the House, he played a key role in uncovering the House bank scandal.
